Bremen is the city of short distances – between places and people. The startup-ecosystem is strongly connected with the local industry. Bremen is also home to notable Research Institutes like DFKI and Fraunhofer IFAM.

Regional Hubs

Bremen, 550.000 inhabitants, has a number of local startup-hubs: The „Überseestadt“, harbor city, is the vibrant heart of the startup-ecosystem with the highest startup-density in Bremen. Other hotspots are Neustadt and Viertel, especially for creativity and arts, and the Technologiepark near University Bremen with technology-oriented startups.

Sectoral Focus of the Startup Ecosystem

Bremen’s startup ecosystem is strongly connected with the local industry (aerospace, maritime industry & logistics, automotive, wind energy), so B2B is one focus. Another one is the creative sector.

Local Financing Landscape/Presence of VCs

The Bremer Aufbau Bank (BAB) is the contact for public funding programs; private funders are i.e. neusta or kraftwerk. Bremen has a high foundation-density.

Presence and Industrial Focus of Established Industries

Bremen’s economic success is built onto aerospace (OHB, Airbus), maritime industry & logistics (BLG), automotive (Daimler) and wind energy.

Presence of Incubators/Accelerators

Bremen’s main incubators are “BRUT” (public, offered by Bremer Aufbau Bank BAB) and the private incubators “kraftwerk city accelerator”, focusing on energy-solutions, and “neusta startup ”.

Additionally, there is an increasing number of Coworking-Spaces.

The local public support for founders are centralized in the “BEGIN” network.

Presence of Research Institutes and Universities

Four universities form the educational landscape: the University of Bremen, the University of Applied Science, the University of the Arts and the private Jacobs University. Coaching and events for (potential) founders are offered by “BRIDGE”.

Bremen is also home to notable Reseach Institutes like DFKI (German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence), Fraunhofer IFAM (Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials) or the LEMEX (Small Businesses and Entrepreneurship).
